Ala Thel Dala (Devilled Potatoes)

Description

A Sri Lankan classic - potatoes fried in oil, but of course its not that simple.  We throw in some chillies, some spices, some maldi-fish... the mouth watering result is best served up as a side to a plate of rice with other curries.  Serves 4-6.

Ingredients

1⁄2 lb
potatoes (boiled & skinned)
1⁄2 T
chilie powder
1⁄4 t
dried chili pieces
3 T
oil
1 T
maldive fish (optional, Sri Lankan dried fish)
1  
onion (sliced)
6  
curry leaves (optional)
   
Salt (to taste)

Instructions

  1. Cut the potatoes into 1-inch cubes.
  2. Heat the oil in a pan, and add the onions and curry leaves.
  3. When partially fried, reduce the heat.
  4. Add the chillie powder, chillie pieces, turmatic and fry for a few seconds.
  5. Add the potatoes and the maldive fish to the to the pan and stir.
  6. Cook for about 3-5 minutes stirring periodically.
  7. This is a spicy side dish that goes well with rice.
