On setting up the baby registry
First blog post from the wee little Netbook! Keyboard isn't bad.
I'm in the process of compiling my list of "must haves" for when our little bundle of pooping, drooling, joy falls into our laps. I felt the need to comment on the availability and usability of various online registries. In this case, the obvious ones of Babies R'Us vs. Amazon.com (joint with thebump.com).
Previously, we went shopping at Babies R Us and I was delighted by the way we could walk around and 'zap' whatever items in-store met our look or feel. Good for getting information on stroller solutions, crib/cot solutions and the like. That said, the website likes to email me (it appears) on a daily basis and I'm getting quite tired of their constant advertising. Nothing is particularly cheap even with the sales and the things you really want are generally excluded from the sale or discount. That said, everything on the registry is 10% off some days after the baby arrives - so if there's anything outstanding, that's a bit of a savings.
Then today, I thought - why not check out my favourite online shopping store - Amazon.com! First, I was incredibly happy with the ease and speed to set up a registry. Babies R Us took me three days and their system somehow dropped my registry a few times before I went and concretely established it in the store. In terms of the navigation - Amazon works seamlessly with your registry in the same way it does with your shopping cart and wishlist. Unfortunately I can't say the same for Babies R Us as their website is slow - gives limited information - you find yourself clicking on the product info to actually get anything useful. I am a big advocate of looking at customer reviews and buying things that people (over 50 ppl) have recommended. It took me half an hour to try to figure out what type of bathtub would be good. On Amazon, it's much easier.
So these are my thoughts. I will eventually post links to the registry of choice - I'm looking also for cost effective solutions and we are limited in space. We are also going for reusable diapers and strangely enough going to try to do without a stroller and crib for as long as possible!
Addendum: Amazon has a wide selection, good reviews, and gives business to the 'little guy'. Babies R Us isn't the one stop shop they'd like to think they are!

Baby Registry now up and
Baby Registry now up and running (Link to it on Amazon). It's still in the works but most things are pretty much decided on. On second thought ended up going with a crib after all!
Also, there are no clothes on the registry - reason being I assume I'll get tons of outfits both used and new. Baby blankets have been provided by myself and my mother. We prefer gender neutral stuff - the old rule being the baby's essentially non-gender until he or she is 2 years old! Plus, what happens when we have the next one and its the opposite gender? ;)
Finally, yes - we know the gender - but we're not telling. That will be news that will accompany the birth of the child and not before!
