G-Diapers
Today, started using our G-Diapers (small) for the first time.
Initially tried with the flushable refills. The first go was an epic fail. I didn't tighten it enough and the diaper leaked everywhere. The second time I was quite conservative - changing his diaper soon after I knew he'd made a little poop. The diaper was still mostly dry. Both the first and second diapers flushed well (following the instructions on the G-diaper website to tear the diaper open and drop it in peices into the toilet). The third diaper I left on while he was sleeping between feedings. Again, everything was well contained and the little bit of poo that managed to touch the liner (possibly when I was changing him) was easily washed away with a bit of hot water and soap. I have extra liners so not a problem.
Then I tried the reusable diaper inserts. I'd already prepared them by washing them who-knows-how-many-times (threw them in with every single baby wash load before and after his birth). I tested them under the faucet earlier and found the material to be super absorbant. So with some confidence (though the diaper is half the thickness it is when you use the flushable refill) I set up a diaper. I'd also bought the poop-catching toilet paper like sheets (I think it's fuzzibuns brand - whatever was on sale on amazon) to put on top of the cloth diaper to collect the poop. The first diaper came away after another long between feeding sleep - completely full and no leaks! No discomfort to him either though I think both he and I will take some getting used to the elastic waistband. The poop did collect on the liner.. meaning I could just rinse the cloth diaper in hot water and set it aside for washing. Not too shabby! I have 12 reusable inserts - I'm not entirely sure if this is enough for between washing loads. That said, we've been doing laundry every two or three days... so will see. Otherwise can always resort to the flushable inserts (and the left over disposable diapers which I think I'll still use at night time when I'm half asleep - at least until I get more accustomed to the G-diapers).
Note: i have 4 G-diapers in total, 1 bag of 40 flushable refills, 12 reusable inserts (prewashed) - Not sure if I will need more! So far, have been able to cycle 2 diapers (1st epic fail diaper is in the wash, and there's 1 more diaper as a backup).

Kiran went through a growth
To give a further idea of
To give a further idea of economics... for gDiapers
3 x 2 diapers/pack = 3 x $30 (~$26.99 on Amazon/BabiesRUs/Diapers.com)
5 x 6 re-usable inserts/pack = 5 x $30 (~$26.99 on Amazon/BabiesRUs/Diapers.com)
TOTAL = ~ $240 for small sized diapers (8-14lbs) (need to spend a similiar amount for the medium sized diapers later on).
IN COMPARISON - if paying about $24 for a pack of diapers that may or may not last 1 week (in our experience so far as were using the disposable diapers for the first few weeks until the umbilical cord stub fell off); for 52 weeks. Total = ~$1,248.
At the end of the day, the washing and rinsing and changing... a little more work is way worth it! Of course the saved expense will be spent in turn on our trip to visit his grandparents in France!
