Random acts of kindness

on Friday, 8th January 2010 - 13:49

Today I was struck by how easy it is to help others.  For one, I was feeling rather low as am currently hunting for that perfect job that best utilizes my unique background of chemical engineering, science, and computers (not so much).  Got a hair cut and had a lovely chat with the hairdresser.

In a good mood, I decided to stop for the lunch special at a local chinese restaurant.  The waitress was in such a good mood and her cheerfulness further picked me up.  The food was delicious and more than I could consume.  So with the untouched left overs I headed to the subway with an eye out for someone who would benefit.  The nice gentleman who was trying to sell the homeless newspapers started to give me his promotional speech, but before he could continue I asked if he was sorted for lunch.  He said "Why no"... so I asked if he'd like to have the untouched leftovers from my lunch.  The surprise on his face and delight were enough to keep me feeling embharassed and good both at the same time.  He took the food and I figure even if he doesn't eat it, he would know someone who would benefit from it.

As I left the subway and headed towards my home, I saw a lady walking towards me and a quarter dropped from her person onto the floor.  I know it's just a quarter but I thought I would pick it up and run after her to give it to her.  She was surprised that I would give it to her but in that instant she realised she hadn't put money in the parking metre.  So again, it was with great delight she reacted and I left feeling both embharassed and good at the same time.

It really pays to get out of the house once in awhile and to do some random acts of kindness. Now to get on with the day and hunt for my lost karaoke files as expecting guests this weekend. ;)

Battling Carpal Tunnel Syndrome with Acupuncture

on Tuesday, 12th January 2010 - 8:49

Over the last several months my CTS has been getting worse and worse - it first started in the last few months of 2008 and come and gone with little to worry about.  However, since moving to the States the carpal tunnel has gotten worse to the extent of breaking my sleep routine.  Both hands are affected and I would wake up multiple times a night with one or both hands losing all feeling in the last three fingers.  Then it started getting worse - while driving, while knitting, while cooking - the feeling would drain out of those fingers.

I had started wearing splints to bed in September, and it worked until the begining of last month when even while wearing the splints I'd wake up with my hands numb.  So finally, I gave in to both my doctor and husband and opted to try out Acupuncture as a solution.  I've previously turned to acupuncture to solve the problem of heavy migraines several years past, so my confidence in that it works is fairly high.

Yesterday I went to my first appointment.  After reviewing my full history of aches and pains from cold sweats to achey knees, the acupuncturist stuck me with needles (knees and down and then upper back) and I relaxed in this pincushion state for 10-20 minutes.

One magical thing she did was to "pop my muscles" just behind my neck using a pressure point.  The muscle literally jumped and immediately relaxed.  After this, I was so greatful and relaxed all the way home.  By 7pm I was falling asleep and I had possibly the best night of sleep in weeks!

Unfortunately come morning, I could feel the CTS stirring in my hands but with less severity than before.  I'm due for another appointment in a week's time, so I thought it a good thing to blog my progress.  Let me be the ginnea pig :)

New & Improved theme of ahasaetharu.net...

on Friday, 15th January 2010 - 15:39

I've always had a bit of a problem with the layout of my site.  For one, it had a green background.  For two, as much as I liked the bookmark, there were too many colors contrasting off each other.  But most importantly the theme did not reflect the title of the site - Stars in the Sky.  A few other content issues - that I would like to invite people to post their own opinionated blogs on the site, and that the site isn't solely to sell me - but to be informative and to a purpose.  So - with all of these things in mind, I've reduced the amount of content.  To find out about me, you need to go to the "About" page.  But for all other things - there are direct links off the main page.  Colors are a splash of gold with lots of light and a white background.

In other news: Drupal 7 - Alpha has been released!  I will be slowly migrating everything to a new D7 site over the next while.

The great Nutella test - NA vs. EU

on Saturday, 16th January 2010 - 9:44
One smells nuttier and looks smoother (melted) than the other.  They're pretty close - but the european one is slightly tastier, creamier, and nuttier.  Two blind testers and two non-blind testers of whom two were european (French & English) and two NA (Canadian & American). The NA has modified palm oil and cocoa whereas the EU one has vegetable oil and fat reduced cocoa. To Ferrero Roche - WE WANT THE EUROPEAN VERSION!!!

Status update

on Sunday, 24th January 2010 - 17:16

Been keeping myself busy with recruiters and interviews, fingers crossed that I will find that job and that it will also find me in mutual good company!  Threading the needle with a string of biopharma is a long and patient task.

In the meantime, had some minor surgery done and spent the last week recovering.  Still going for acupuncture for the carpal tunnel (which appeared to have been stress induced seeing as I'd never gone for surgery before) and spent the week recovering from the after affects of general anesthesia.  The subsequent migraine that hit me in the last three days was unstoppable and so been dosing myself with Tylenol.  To my relief, this evening it seems to have left me.

I'm catching up on the world of Velgarth by M. Lackey.  It's so nice to be re-united with all of my collection that was sitting in Toronto the last five years or so.  I'm not reading in depth, more speed reading since I've read these books at least five times each in the past.  Working through my library is also a good distraction from having to wait for phone calls and feedback!

Maya has been a good sport and we've been letting her off-leash finally with her coming back consistently enough that I'm happy.  It's so nice not to have a dog that attacks other dogs as well!  Though, I'll never forget Scruffy.  She's being spoilt rotten with home made dog food featuring old peppers and chicken liver.  She eats crusty old bread as well!!! Our own waste disposal.

Finally, keeping fit with our very own Wii.  Have to say I prefer the active games to the usual racing games.  Though I've always been partial to mortal kombat.  We've got Wii sports resort and the Wii fit plus.  I would recommend both with 5 stars as I'm not at all bored like I was after a week of playing the Wii fit and original Wii sports (borrowed c/o friends).  I think their games are getting better as they tailor the new types of games to their audience.  Steph beats me at most games but I can totally crush him when it comes to duelling with swords! :)
